Technical skill, applied to real change.
I’m Jason Carter, a cybersecurity student at Old Dominion University with a CompTIA Security+ certification. Running two Cyber Academy camps changed what I want from this field: I’m not just interested in securing systems, I want to use security to help people and create real change. Today that work is an internship at RFK Solutionz, where I handle IT deployment and CMMC Level 1 and 2 compliance research, the point where technical work meets policy. This portfolio shows how I got here and where I’m headed, including a possible path into law.
Beyond the classroom
Running two Cyber Academy camps, one for boys and one for girls, changed how I think about this field. The camps brought in about 50 students, and I planned the interactive, game-based activities we ran across two themed days. What stood out to me was watching kids who weren’t used to being believed in light up when I told them they could do it. That’s when my goal shifted from only securing systems to helping the people who use them.
Where I’m headed
After graduation I plan to start my career in a security role, then go to law school so I can combine my interests in cybersecurity, law, and sociology. I want to understand how technology and society interact, and eventually work in a role that addresses the social impact of technology and supports the people it affects.
